EL: You admired Benjamin Franklin because of his early industriousness but found a different man when the two of you worked as diplomats in France. Had he become lazy or disorganized?

Adams: Franklin was a great and good man. He had wit at will. He had a satire that was good-natured and caustic. He had talents of irony, allegory and fable that he could adapt with great skill to promote the truth.

However, I am useless at such things. Incessant dinners and dissipations were not the object of my mission. My countrymen were suffering in America in 1778, their affairs were in great confusion in Europe, and to receive an answer from Philadelphia might take six months. I never had more work to do or so little to show for it.

The longer I lived in Europe and the more I considered our affairs, the more important our alliance with France seemed to me. Yet it was wasteful to have three commissioners there [Arthur Lee was the third]. Mr. Franklin himself would have been quite enough.

EL: The British newspapers had a field day with you.

Adams: The English made fine work of me, yes. But the falsest of it all was that I was disgusted with the Parisians. In truth, the French held in their hands the power to determine the fate of our country, and at the beginning, I did not speak their language.

EL: Your brand of leadership is a modest combination of competence and determination. Yet, even then, you felt that type of leadership did not lend itself to public life.

Adams: The longer I live, and the more I see of public men, the more I wish to be a private one. Modesty is a virtue that can never thrive in public. Modest merit! Is there such a thing remaining in public life?

EL: You don?t want to be a celebrity, but a leader.

Adams: Thanks to God that he gave me stubbornness when I know I am right.

EL: You were often caught between strong personalities. How did you manage it?

Adams: There are persons whom in my heart I despise, others I abhor. Yet I am not obliged to inform them of it.

This kind of disguise is a necessary branch of wisdom. Far from being immoral, it is a duty and a virtue.

EL: Any advice for young leaders?

Adams: Cultivate the manners of your own country, not those of Europe. The more decisively you adhere to simplicity in your dress and behavior, the more you devote yourself to business and study, and the less to dissipation and pleasure, the more you will recommend yourself to every man and woman whose friendship is worth having. Urbanity without ostentation will succeed everywhere and at all times.

Chemists merge experimentation with theory in understanding of water molecule

ScienceDaily (May 18, 2012) ? Water is the most abundant and one of the most frequently studied substances on Earth, yet its geometry at the molecular level — the simple two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom, and how they interact with other molecules, including other water — has remained somewhat of a mystery to chemists.

Most understanding at that level is theoretical, requiring the use of supercomputers to make innumerable calculations over periods of weeks to make educated guesses as to the arrangements and structure of water clusters before they form into liquid water or ice.

But a new study, using experimentation with a highly advanced spectrometer for molecular rotational spectroscopy, has removed some of the mystery and validates some very complex theory involving the way water molecules bond. It is published in the May 18 issue of the journal Science.

“We set out to determine quantitatively the structure that small assemblies of water adopt, and then compare them to theory to see how well current quantum chemistry predicts the properties of molecules,” said Brooks Pate, a chemist in the University of Virginia’s College of Arts & Sciences who led the study. “We found experimentally that modern quantum chemistry has reached the point where its theories are proving out in the lab regarding the unusual directional bonding properties of water clusters.”

The properties of water, and how it interacts with itself and other molecules, is the basis for many processes in biology, and likely played a major role in the development of life on Earth. But understanding how those bonds form at the molecular level has been largely guesswork.

“For the first time, now we have an actual physical picture of what water’s molecules put together look like, and it turns out they adopt three different geometries,” Pate said. “This is in agreement with theory.”

Pate and his U.Va. team identified and imaged a three-dimensional geometry that a water molecule takes on that is the likely precursor structure for forming liquid water and ice.

“We found that the bonding strengths of liquid water actually begin to emerge even in a tiny cluster,” Pate said. “The challenge is figuring out how it interacts with other molecules and how the forces between two molecules of water can be described quantitatively, because the orientation of how the waters come at each other makes a big difference in the binding.”

There are innumerable possibilities for how this happens, and theorists, including Pate’s colleague on the paper, quantum chemist George Shields of Bucknell University, have been working on the details for years without direct validation from experiments.

The difficulty has been in developing techniques that are sensitive enough to image the tiny water molecules and how they orient themselves when interacting with other water molecules. The breakthrough came earlier this year when Pate’s U.Va. team used a new tool, a molecular rotational spectrometer developed during the last two years, to make precise measurements that ultimately validated what theory has expressed.

The improved sensitivity of the instrument comes from advances in high-speed digital electronics that provide unprecedented data throughput in the measurement. This core technology is being commercialized for applications in chemical analysis by a Charlottesville start-up venture, BrightSpec.

“This will allow chemists to transfer what we’ve learned to larger systems,” Pate said. “We are checking to see if theory can get right the structures of the arrangements of water molecules so that that information can be used to see how water interacts in larger systems.”

The larger systems could include bio-molecules, such as protein in DNA, and how surrounding water molecules might interact with those molecules through hydrogen bonds.

“It is very satisfying to see that the experimental work we did, completely independently of theory, came together so perfectly with the theory,” Pate noted.

He said his research is the behind-the-scenes workings of chemistry that ultimately makes up the big picture of how things come together at much larger scales.

“You may not want to know how a bridge was designed, but you sure want to know it was done right,” he said. “Likewise, if a theory is used to predict, for example, how a medicine might work, you ideally would want to be able to test the theory to make sure it’s right before making the medicine. That would be the ultimate goal — to have theory and experimentation in sync.”

(AP) ? Brian McNamee says some of the medical evidence he saved in a beer can was not used on baseball pitcher Roger Clemens.

McNamee is the main prosecution witness in the case against Clemens, who’s accused of lying to Congress when he denied using performance-enhancing drugs. McNamee testified this week that he injected the seven-time Cy Young Award winner with steroids and human growth hormone.

McNamee has said he stored medical evidence from shooting Clemens with steroids in 2001. But under cross-examination, he acknowledged that some of the items were not in fact used on Clemens, such as a needle to inject human growth hormone.

McNamee, Clemens’ former strength and conditioning coach, also testified that a pin included in the beer can might not have been used on Clemens. He said it was either used on Clemens or another player, whom he did not name.

SpaceX’s unmanned?Dragon capsule?is due to deliver food, supplies and science experiments to the outpost as a test mission for NASA. The space agency awarded the company a $1.6 billion contract for 12 robotic resupply flights to fill the delivery needs left over by the space shuttle fleet’s retirement last year.

SpaceX is one of two companies with NASA contracts for robotic cargo delivery flights (Virginia’s Orbital Technologies Corp. is the other), but is the first to actually try a launch. And as the first American-built robotic cargo ship ever to visit the space station, there are some unique aspects of this mission NASA is hoping will succeed.

Here’s how the robotic mission is expected to play out:

Step 1: Launch

The Dragon capsule is set to lift off aboard?SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket?from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.SpaceX?has use of the facility’s Space Launch Complex 40, where the rocket will blast off May 19 at 4:55 a.m. EDT,?if plans stay on schedule. The initial ascent is powered by Falcon 9′s first stage, consisting of nine SpaceX Merlin 1C rocket engines.

Step 2: Main Engine Cut Off/Stage Separation

At a little before 180 seconds into the flight, the?Falcon 9′s first stage engines will cut off, and the first stage will drop off, falling back to Earth. At this point, the booster’s second stage engines should start, further propelling the vehicle into orbit.

Step 3: Payload Separation

Around 9 minutes into the flight, the Dragon capsule should separate from Falcon 9′s second stage and orbit on its own. The capsule will deploy its solar arrays to start soaking up energy from the sun. At this point, Dragon is on its own and must maneuver using its onboard thrusters. Step 4: Orbital Checkouts

After reaching orbit, Dragon will begin a series of checkouts to make sure it’s functioning as designed and ready to meet up with the station.

Teams on the ground will lead the vehicle through tests of its Absolute GPS (AGPS) system, which uses global positioning system satellites to determine its location in space. It will also demonstrate its performance in free drift phase, with thrusters inhibited. Finally, Dragon will test out its abort system to prove it can terminate its activities and move away from the space station if something goes wrong.

Step 5: Fly-Under

During its third day in orbit, Dragon will fire its thrusters to perform a fly-under of the International Space Station, swooping to 1.5 miles (2.5 kilometers) below the outpost. At this point, the capsule will make radio contact with the station using a system called the COTS Ultra-high frequency Communication Unit to communicate.

During the fly-under, Dragon will also test a secondary locator system called the relative GPS system, which uses the spacecraft’s position relative to the space station to establish its coordinates.

While Dragon is flying under the station, the six-person crew inside the orbiting laboratory will be monitoring their new visitor. They will use a crew command panel onboard the station to communicate with the capsule and send it a command to turn on a strobe light.
